J. Spelman, The Life of Ælfred the Great (Oxford, 1709)

John Spelman, The Life of Ælfred the Great (Oxford, 1709).

This is a life of King Alfred the Great (reigned 871-899) by John Spelman (1594-1643) published in 1709. It was first published posthumously in a Latin translation by Christopher Wase, as Aelfredi magni, Anglorum regis invictissimi vita tribus libris comprehensa (Oxford,1678), while this book is based on its original English version edited and enlarged by Thomas Hearne (1678-1735), an English antiquary known for his publications of medieval chronicles and other historical texts.

The author, Sir John Spelman (1594-1643), was the eldest son of Henry Spelman (1563/4-1641), a historian and antiquary reputed for his collection of medieval records. John Spelman also edited the so-called Spelman Psalter  (aka the Stowe Psalter), which was owned by his father.

The earliest records of the epithet of King Alfred, 'the Great', are found in the sixteenth century, but the Latin version of this book published in 1678 is said to be responsible for its popularisation. See Simon Keynes and Michael Lapidge, Alfred the Great: Asser's Life of King Alfred and Other Contemporary Sources (London, 1983), p. 44.
